Hello, I’m Satori!
I’m always telling stories I haven’t heard yet.
Most people think of role-playing as just a social pastime. It’s usually portrayed as a group setting off on an adventure together.
But you can also role-play on your own. In solo role-playing, you are the only player in the game. You are the one who decides what happens to your character and the world around them. There is no one else to rely on for guidance. It is just you and the dice.
It’s not like a gamebook where you choose between predefined paths and eventually discover all the endings.
The game world is not predetermined; it is brought into existence through the game itself. The main tool for this is called an “Oracle”. An Oracle is a way of asking questions of the game world and getting answers that you cannot predict. This is usually done through a dice roll. The Oracle may answer with a yes or no, or throw a random event into the scene – something you would never have chosen yourself. Furthermore, roll tables are utilised to provide inspirational prompts. This is precisely what makes it special: you relinquish some control over the story. The dice have a say. What emerges is not a story you already know, but one you discover.
With that in mind, I warmly welcome you to “diced!”, the solo roleplaying podcast.
